Here's Why You Can't Follow Through

Updated: Apr 3, 2023

Have you ever made an intention to do something, but for some reason you just didn't take action or struggled to follow through?!

Maybe you set goals, and despite having a strong feeling about doing something you couldn’t keep motivated.

Or you told your best friend you wanted to do something, like run that half marathon or go back to school, but then you didn't…

Maybe despite health concerns you’re struggling to keep up with exercise, making lifestyle changes, or you keep forgetting to take medications?

We all experience it at some point in our lives. And I can tell you why and how to finally overcome what's getting in your way…

Resistance.

Those conscious and unconscious oppositions to change that get in our way.

They often have to be acknowledged or understood before they aren’t necessary anymore. If it is conscious resistance it could come in the form of dismissiveness, refusing, or other excuses.

Unconscious resistance is hidden and serves to protect us from knowing or from experiencing uncertainty or fear and might show up as forgetting, delaying, procrastination, or contribute to roadblocks you can’t understand.

All these forces can prevent you from taking action towards your goals or desires. It's sneaky, but more common than you think.

There are many reasons why you might experience resistance. Since each person's experience is unique, there isn't a catch-all reason for why it happens but often it's fear: fear of failure, fear of success, fear of disappointment or fear of the unknown.

So what can you do about it?

Journaling

Journaling is a great way to identify your emotions, see where they stem from, and offer you a process for listening deeply to yourself. You can follow all your thoughts and that can offer clues and help you find clarity. Journaling can help you discover the source of your resistance or self-sabotage. It can also help you process your emotions, find compassion for your setbacks, and direct you to what you most want and need.

Meditation

Meditation is a great way to quiet your mind, find clarity, and not be distracted by the little things. It can help put your emotions and feelings into perspective and help you deepen your connection to yourself, your peace, and your inner wisdom. This deeper trust in yourself can also help you feel connected to your purpose in life and help expand creativity. Meditation changes your brain which helps facilitate change in your life. (Remember: even if you think meditation is not for you, there are many different ways to meditate, so you can find the way that works best for you.)
