Creativity Is Not Extra: It’s a Health Practice & A Way Back to Yourself

Creativity is not limited to artists. It is not reserved for people who paint, write, perform, design, or call themselves creative.

Creativity is the way we stay in relationship with possibility and ourselves. It is how we express what cannot always be said directly. It is how we explore, imagine, arrange, repair, play, and make meaning.

From a psychoanalytic perspective, creativity gives form to the inner world. A color may carry a feeling. A collage may reveal a conflict. A poem may say what ordinary language cannot. A meal may become an expression of love, and a garden may become a conversation with grief, hope, and renewal.

Creativity allows something within us to become visible. It opens up a wider view of ourselves.

Beginning Before You Feel Ready

Recently, I attended an art retreat in France. I was surrounded by women with much more experience than I had. Some were professional artists. Some were teachers. Some had been making art for years.

Despite a olifetime of dabbling in many forms of art and creative expression, I was the least experienced in the room. I loved the immersion, and the permission to just Be. There were long stretches of color mixing, painting, experimenting, making something and not knowing exactly where it would go. I had to let the process teach me.

That is part of why creativity can be so healing. It asks us to tolerate not knowing. It asks us to begin before we feel ready. It asks us to make something without the guarantee that it will be good, beautiful, useful, or understood.

Creativity puts us in direct contact with vulnerability, freedom, play, frustration, discovery, and surprise.

The Courage to Be Seen

At the end of the retreat, everyone hung their work and talked about what they had made. That moment was beautiful, a bit nerve-wracking, and so exhilarating. It is one thing to create privately, and it is another to let your work be seen. But isn’t that true in life too?

You show your work when you speak honestly. You show your work when you share an idea. You show your work when you ask for what you need and when you allow someone to know the real you.

Creativity strengthens the part of us that is willing to engage with life. To try, revise, begin again, and make meaning from what we have lived.

Creativity Beyond Art

When I say creativity is a pillar of health, I do not mean you need to start painting or writing poetry, unless that is what calls to you. Creativity may show up in cooking, gardening, decorating a room, arranging flowers, planning a gathering, choosing colors, singing in the car, moving your body to music, or finding a new way to approach an old problem.

Creativity connects us to curiosity. It reminds us that we are not only here to manage, produce, and endure. We are also here to express, explore, and experience beauty. We tap into our vitality.

A Simple Practice

If you want to tend to this pillar of health and expand creativity in your life, begin with a list.

Write at the top of a page: Things that make me feel alive.

Then let yourself write freely. You don’t need to make it impressive. Let it be specific. It can be the smallest of moments.

A certain song. The smell of jasmine. Cooking slowly. Wandering through a bookstore. Watching birds at the feeder. Painting at the kitchen table. Creating a bouquet from your garden. Improvising on the piano. Rearranging a room. Sitting near water. A conversation that opens something in you.

When you finish, ask yourself: What is one small way I can make space for this part of myself this week?

Creativity is not extra. It is one of the ways the soul breathes and it’s a window into you.
